This paper explores the co-evolution of chromatic language and digital design tools in the context of contemporary Italian fashion, through a comparative analysis of two iconic brands taken as examples: Prada and Armani. The study adopts a critical and interdisciplinary methodology, combining visual analysis, historical documentation, and material experimentation. Based on official fashion archives from 1988 to 2024, five chromatic phases are identified for each brand, highlighting shifting aesthetic paradigms and technological influences on color strategies. Particular attention is given to the impact of digital tools—such as Pantone systems, 3D simulation software, and algorithmic color generation—on chromatic coherence, material rendering, and semantic perception.
The analysis reveals that, despite the growing standardization of digital codes, color remains a culturally and materially embedded language. Variations in chromatic perception are observed between different substrates (e.g., cotton versus silk) and across cultural contexts. The study further compares symbolic color meanings in Western and Chinese traditions, revealing divergent emotional, ritual, and social associations that persist despite globalized digital practices.
Ultimately, the research argues that color in contemporary fashion is no longer a static visual attribute, but an adaptive semiotic system shaped by materiality, memory, and technology. The findings advocate for a more sensitive and culturally aware use of digital color systems, encouraging designers to bridge the gap between algorithmic simulation and embodied visual experience.
